Chip Roberson Subaru-IMBA Trail Care Crew Visits Santa Rosa, CA on November 20, 2010

The Sonoma County Trails Council is proud to announce that the International Mountain Bicycling Association’s Trail Care Crew will be in Santa Rosa to teach the art and science of trailbuilding by interactive learning and hands-on trailwork. The Crew will teach “sustainable” trail building, which means building trails that last a long time and require minimal maintenance. This helps reduce trail damage, protects the environment, and enhances visitor enjoyment.

Lee Alderman Marshalling the GranFondo

Last Saturday, I got to spend some time hanging out with a couple hundred fine folks from our cycling community. The occasion? It was the party honoring the nearly 900 volunteers it took to run Levi’s GranFondo. That’s right! Just under a thousand people were needed to ensure the 6,000 riders had a pleasant experience. And, I was proud to be one of them since I volunteered to ride…

Jon Dick April classes at Community Bikes

There's still room in the Bike Basics class at Community Bikes this Saturday. We'll cover what every bike owner should know: checking air pressure, when & how to lube a chain and how to fix a flat tire.

There is also still room in the other classes in this series:

4-10-10 - Brakes: how they work, what goes wrong and how to fix it

4-17-10 - Shifters and Derailers: how they work, what goes wrong and how to fix it.

4-24-10 - Introduction to Bearings &…

Paul Diaz Race Report-Davis Crit 3-14-10

This weekends race really begins the race season for me. I have already done a couple of races this year but they were mainly tune-ups for what I perceive to be the start of the season; March. I had a specific mind set for the Sunday races (I was entered in the 3/4 Elite race and the Masters 35 3/4 race) that being to help my team mates as much as possible to win. I wanted to be near the front and push the pace whenever I could.

In race one (Elite 3/4) I got to the line late and was… Continue

Chip Roberson Will Sonoma Valley High School Fence cut off bike path?

For anyone who has followed our bike-path sagas in Sonoma, you know that the city council finally voted to "take our disconnect and connect it" by building the bridge over Fryer Creek at Newcomb Street (see place-mark 1 on attached image). Now the school board is building a fence behind the high school (see red line on attached map).

Fence to block off back of… Continue

Chip Roberson The CalTrans Catch-22

In October a resident of the Springs area of Sonoma Valley came to me rather upset about an encounter she had with a car on the newly renovated section of highway CA-12 in Boyes Springs. This cyclist was riding in what she perceived to be a bike lane alongside CA-12 when a car took the bicycle lane to use as a turning lane for Thompson Ave and almost hit her.

I contacted the county and the employees were very responsive but the "answer" from CalTrans was, well, typical… Continue

Paul Diaz Ready to Rumble?

Well here it is January already and the race season is quickly approaching! This year brings change and added commitments that bring excitement and apprehension. First off I am with a new team; Colavita-Baci (http://www.colavitaracing-norcal.com/index.html) bringing the teammate aspect to my racing much more to the forefront! A well rounded team with sprinters, climbers and plenty of old guys like me to race with, what more could a… Continue

Lee Alderman My Thanksgiving Day ride

Yesterday was Thanksgiving and that means a it is a time for traditions. You have the tradition of spending time with your friends and family to give thanks. The tradition of eating way too much even though last year you promised yourself you would never eat that much again. Of course, we can’t forget football, whether it’s watching or playing. For me, you have to add the tradition of cycling.

This was the second year I joined the NorCal Annual Thanksgiving Day Ride. Last year I got… Continue

Lee Alderman The Big Ring Coffee Ride

Yesterday, I got to head out on the bike with two of my best friends, Coach Tim and Brian. The riding plan was an easy loop out of Sausalito, around Tiburon, over the Golden Gate Bridge to the Marina, and back. The real plan was to spend 3+ hours chit-chatting followed by lunch.

This day came about in a rather unique way. It starts with the fact that Brian’s family owns a small cabin in Lake Tahoe. A couple of weeks ago Brian asked Tim and I if we wanted to go up to the cabin with… Continue

Lee Alderman Perfect Off Season Ride

There are two ways to make Coach Tim proud. The first is to meet a goal that you have worked to accomplish. The second is riding smart. And that’s what I did today.

My normal group didn’t have anything going on today so Pat invited me to ride with the NorCal team. Although I accepted, I was also anxious. You see, these guys and girls can ride fast, very fast, and I wasn’t sure that I wanted to go that hard. To be really honest, I was not sure I could keep up with them at all.… Continue

Lee Alderman The cross training has begun

Well, after a few weeks of thinking about it, talking about it, and even writing about it, my cross training finally got off the ground last week. It must of been all of the FB entries about running, swimming, yoga, and such that got me going. Or maybe it’s the fact that I am already feeling a difference on the weekend rides when I don’t workout during the week.

My cross training is pretty simple. I do a little running, strength training and core work. I frequently suggest to myself… Continue

Lee Alderman Off season shenanigans

Last year, during our cycling road trip to Colorado, I made a comment about our waitress being a “buxom blonde” and the mocking was commenced immediately. I was dutifully reminded by my younger cycling friends that no one says buxom anymore except for us old guys. I can only imagine how they will respond to my using the word shenanigans in the title. As you read on you will hopefully agree that no other word would do.

A group of us met on Sunday for an easy 50-mile ride that included… Continue

Lee Alderman The "newbie" ride

One of the many things I like about the off season are newbie rides. This is when my cycling friends and I hit the open road with folks who are just starting their journey into the world of cycling. Newbies are always welcome to join us but they usually don’t because of concerns about the pace, distance, the amount of climbing, etc. However, in the off season we are happy to cruise at their speed and help them become better cyclists. That’s exactly what I did this Saturday.

Pat, Mike… Continue

Chip Roberson Help Save Sonoma's Proposed Fryer Creek Bridge

This message was recently posted by Sonoma resident on the Sonoma Valley Cyclists email list and I'm posting it here to help reach a wider audience.

On Wednesday, November 4, the Sonoma City Council will be discussing the use of the City’s grant-funded bicycle improvement money to build a bicycle/pedestrian bridge across Fryer Creek either at Newcomb Street or Pickett Street. On September 16, at the last City Council meeting where this bike/pedestrian bridge was considered,… Continue
